Took a quick trip to Villars today to do a little grocery shopping. They cut down some trees in front of this school and I couldn't believe how much it opened up the view.

Australia Day
Koalas and Kangaroos
We scrounged around the house to come up with anything that resembled Australia. We were able to get Matt out to the bar (for an hour) on his national day.

Onions!!
No better way to shield the burning pain of cutting onions than to wear sunglasses. Lauren demonstrates her best sans crying onion cutting skills.

snowshoeing, fondue & sledding
Tonight was a very swiss experience for our visitors. We wanted to go to solalex (a nearby valley that isn't accessible by car in the winter) for a fondue dinner. Instead of taking the easy way and getting picked up by the snowmobile we decided Tessa & Gavin should have a go at snowshoeing! Although not everyone may have enjoyed the experience while it was taking place :) I think in the end looking back on it everyone would give it two thumbs up. I think Tessa said "everyone should have to do that at least once in their lives". The fondue and white wine out in solalex were great and then we made our way back to the car via sleds...also great.

château d'Oex
Tessa, Gavin, Lauren & I made our way to the annual hot air balloon festival in château d'Oex. I've been wanting to go for the past few years and actually had a reason and people to go with this year. Seeing all the balloons being blown up & flown as well as the trick plane & helicopter was wild. Though, probably the wildest moment was seeing a 6 year old kid accidently lose control of his sled and head straight through the car park at speeds I can't even imagine. Amazingly he maneuvered his way through 5 rows of traffic and came out unharmed although we aren't too sure how he faired his father's punishment.

a revolution in switzerland -
Yesterday we discovered that salt & vinegar chips have finally made their way to switzerland. Due to Matt's obsession with S&V chips our cleaning supplies draw has been overrun, you know just in case they stop selling them next week.

Snow-tubing!!
Took a drive over to Leysin today to check out this snow-tubing park they have. There are 9 different runs to choose from. We started out with the easiest ones but quickly made our way to the black runs and sometimes going down two at a time to gain some extra speed.

France for the day
We took a day trip to Chamonix today. Tessa, Gavin and I took the train from Chamonix up to the Glacier Mer de Glace (sea of ice). From there we took a quick trip on a telecabine and then walked down 350 steps to a ice cave which has been carved out of the Glacier. It was pretty wild being inside a glacier!

Tessa, Gavin, Lauren and I went down to Montreux today to take a tour of Chateau de Chillon. It is my second visit to the Castle. Patrick and I first went to visit it in 2004 when we were traveling through Europe together. The castle looks big from the outside but it is Huge on the inside! With over 46 rooms / informative stops along the way it took about an hour and a half to make our way through.

I make all the menus for a local restaurant named cookie. When I say "make" this includes cutting the paper, ironing it out and printing them.

Let the two week cooking marathon begin! Chef Tessa (for those looking to book her for an invent this is not her normal uniform) and her cheesy broccoli soup in bread bowls were amazing!! You should expect to see an increase in food photos during the next two weeks.

Headed out at 5:30am today to pick up Tessa & Gavin at the airport. The airport is surprisingly not that busy so early in the morning.

A night out with the ladies found us at Toscana in Villars. One of the appetizers was this little cheese soufflé of some sort. I thought the presentation was very cute.

Time for a clean! Went grocery shopping today with Karl and Shannon. To fit in all the yummy stuff I bought it required a bit of a fridge clean out! Sorry out of date dressings, jellies & sauces but it's time for you to go...

The best kitchen appliance we have is our toasty machine. Matt has had it since working in the kitchen up on the ski resort years ago. It makes the BEST toasted sandwiches. Seen below is a toasted ham, cheese, onion, roasted pepper, & coriander sandwich accompanied by blood oranges & kiwis. yum

So I've been back in Gryon for over a week and this is my first night at home having dinner. I've been busy working at cookie, the hostel and spent last night babysitting. Matt cooked chicken curry and we shared a bottle of red wine while watching The Invention of Lying. Very nice night.

Looking through a wine glass at dinner being cooked on the stove. yum!

babysat at a rustic / modern apartment in villars last night. I think this lamp fits in quite well with the style. The first time I babysat at this "apartment" I was shocked by the size of it...I'm pretty sure it could be classified as a house inside a building with other houses...it is that big.

hello
I've made a pact with two friends, shannon and lauren, to take on the challenge of taking a photo a day and posting it on a blog to share. It sounded fun as well as being a creative way to document the year. I can't promise that they will be posted daily but will infact take a photo each day and upload them as soon as possible. I look forward to sharing this year of photos with shannon, lauren and whoever else joins in along the way.
